How to export organic to Canada – webinar

The CUTIS project, in cooperation with the Export Promotion Office and Organic Ukraine association, held a series of webinars for Ukrainian organic producers who are interested in exporting to new markets, including the Canadian market. More than 40 organic companies participated in the event.

Why may Canada be attractive to Ukrainian organic producers? North America remains a leader in the consumption of organics. The United States occupies the first place with the rest of the world considerably lagging. Canada, with 3 billion euros of its organic market volume, ranks sixth in the global ranking.

During the event, CUTIS project experts and the Canada Organic Trade Association talked about the main features of successful organic exports to the Canadian market. Export Promotion Office team describes how to use helpful tools for finding and analyzing new markets.

Oleksandra Brovko, CUTIS Ukrainian Senior Trade Policy Expert, analyzed regulatory requirements for exporting organic products to Canada under the Free Trade Agreement between countries. Oleksandra also focused on the importance of labelling requirements for organic products in the Canadian market (download the presentation).

Zoia Pavlenko, CUTIS Environmental Expert, spoke about the specifics of the Canadian organic market and drew participants’ attention to the product groups that are most favoured among Canadian consumers (download the presentation).

Why the Canadian organic market is interesting for Ukrainian companies and how to get organic certification (video)

Canada is one of the world leaders in the consumption of organic products: an average Canadian spends about CAD 150 a month for organics. The Canadian organic food market is the fifth largest in the world (about CAD 5.4 billion).

Zoya Pavlenko, CUTIS environmental expert talks about the Canadian organic market and how to certify organic products according to Canadian standards.

Why is the Canadian organic market promising for Ukrainian exporters?

  1. Canada’s organic goods market is more than $5 billion.
  2. 60% of Canadians say they are ready to buy products that are made without risks to the environment
  3. 25% of consumers are willing to pay more for organic products

Regarding the regulation of the Canadian organic market, it is significantly different from the Ukrainian and European markets. Canada has its own national organic standards (Canada Organic Regulations) adopted in 2009.

More detailed production requirements and a list of permitted substances are contained in CAN/CGSB 32.310-2015 standards – Organic Production Systems – General Principles and Standards of Management, and CAN/CGSB 32.311-2015 – Organic Production Systems – List of Permitted Substances.

At the beginning of 2018, Organic Standard became the only entity in Ukraine entitled to certify manufacturers for exports to Canada.

Organic certification is a voluntary procedure. If manufacturers call their products organic, however, they are required to get certified. Otherwise, financial sanctions for unfair competition cannot be avoided.

Canadian organic certification is now available in Ukraine

Starting 2018 Ukrainian organic exporters can get a Canada Organic Regime (COR) certificate in Ukraine.

“Organic Standard” organization, which received the COR accreditation, announced the information in its newsletter.

“According to a letter from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, our company has been accredited for the certification of organic products in accordance with the requirements set forth in the Regulations for Organic Production in Canada and in the Regulations of the COR,” the statement goes.

Accreditation will be valid for 5 years starting from January 5, 2018, and will be valid in Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Russia, Kyrgyzstan and other countries.

If you are interested in obtaining a certificate under the COR standard, contact Organic Standard for more information.

CUTIS plans several specialized events on certification in 2018. Stay tuned!
